- Subject: [*] auto-clock-1.3.1.hqx
-
- AutoClock version 1.3.1.
-
- AutoClock is an application and a system extension that keeps your Macintosh's
- clock right. As a matter of fact, this clock has the tendency to deviate from
- the standard time every day, which can accumulate to minutes or dozens of
- minutes after one year.
-
- The AutoClock application allows you to:
- - set the clock by calling a time server in Washington D.C., if you have a
- modem,
- - set the clock manually from an accurate source (for exemple a vocal time
- server),
- - display a logbook of every clock changes that occurs on your Macintosh,
- whether they are done with AutoClock, or with another application (the
- General control panel, or the Clock desk accessroy for example),
- - compute the mean clock deviation of the Macintosh's clock for a 24-hour
- period, using data recorded in the logbook,
- - display the date and time in almost any country of the world.
-
- The system extension AutoClock Extension can:
- - periodically open the AutoClock application according to your schedule, to
- perform an automatic clock adjustment by calling the time server, without
- any user intervention,
- - keep the Macintosh's clock continually right, by adjusting it using the
- computed mean clock deviation,
- - detect any clock changes done by any other programs, and record them in the
- application's logbook.
-
-
- Compatibility:
-
- The AutoClock application and AutoClock Extension work on any Macintosh, with
- System 6.0.5 or later, including system 7.0. AutoClock is 32-bit clean, and has
- balloon help if used with System 7.0.
-
- To set clock by calling the time server, AutoClock needs 1200-bps Hayes
- compatible modem (Bell 212A standard). Extra serial ports compatible with the
- Communication Toolbox are recognized.

- Subject: [*] Mac memory configurations
-
- There have been a number of questions and comments in the digest lately
- about memory for the various Mac models - what size SIMMs to use, what
- combinations of SIMMs are allowed, etc. Here is a chart produced and
- published by Apple on AppleLink. The chart lists all the Mac models,
- except those older than the Mac Plus. The Quadra 950 also is not listed,
- but its memory specs are the same as the 900.
-
- For each Mac model the chart lists how much RAM is soldered on the
- board, how many SIMM slots it has, which SIMM sizes work in that model,
- all the possible RAM configurations, and the required SIMM speed. I
- have found this chart to be very useful, and in conjunction with the
- Macintosh Memory Guide published by Connectix, all my Mac memory questions
- have been answered.
-
- The file is a binhexed, self-extracting Compact Pro archive of a MicroSoft
- Word 4.0 file. I apologize for the non-generic format, but the chart
- contains several special symbols that are not in the standard ASCII set,
- so they didn't translate when I tried to make a text file out of it.
- (If someone know how to do this, I would like to know.)
-
- This chart is copyrighted by Apple and was published on AppleLink. I
- got permission from them to publish it here, with the stipulation that
- the copyright remain on the file and that the chart not be used in any
- "for sale" products. Obviously I can't insure that this will happen, but
- you have been informed. Please don't abuse this policy.

- Here's version 1.10 of the freeware UnZip utility. It's the latest version

- There's no documentation (but none is needed). The program is

- only .gif or text files and (new in this version) to set the file type and
- creator depending on the suffix of the uncompressed file. Thus for example

- 1) If necessary, renumber the program so that the first line number is 10.
- 2) Add the following lines to the program:
- 1 POKE 33,33

- Ah, yes, Applesoft. The problem that you're having is that applesoft is a
- tokenized language. If you still have access to an appleII machine, you can
- write out the listing of the file to a strictly text file. One way to do
- this is to add a couple of lines to your program. Open a text file, write to

- Yeah, you can do that, but the system-7 battery extension not surprisingly
- bombs system-6 on the PB-100 with error 32 - a 'slightly obscure error'
- according to System Error tables 3.1. Just use the battery icon in the menu
- bar of system-6 for the old Mac Portable.
-
- But ! If you are running a minimal system-6 (ie Finder is swapped out by the

- Anyone like to write a little 'force sleep' key for both system-6 and 7 ?
-
- BTW, I set up a 1 Meg non-volatile RAM disk on my PB-100, and loaded in a

- Subject: Demo versions (like cp/auto-menus-ii-10.hqx and app/mac-roots-57.hqx)
-
- Henk Schotel says: If a demo version of a program is offered to the
- archives
- this
- should be, and in most cases *is*, indicated in the description of it,
- and the demo should be/is put in the proper directory.
- Sometimes the description of a program does *not* tell that only
- a demo version is offered.
- =====
-
- I agree with this in principle, but I think it is more complex than it
- seems. Every shareware program is, technically, a demo since you
- cannot (legally) keep using it without paying for it. On the other
- hand, a demo program can be used for whatever it is good for.
-
- There are several distinctions that can be made.
-
- Free programs vs. ones you are supposed to pay for. As I said
- before, demo programs are free while shareware you are supposed to pay
- for.
-
- Complete programs vs. limited programs. This distinction creates the
- opposite problem: many of the "complete" programs in the archives are
- shareware. Distinguishing shareware from demos might be regarded as
- implying that you don't need to pay for shareware. Moreover, for those
- who understand the difference and don't want to use unpaid shareware,
- there is the same problem with wasted time downloading them.
-
- I'm not sure there is a perfect solution, but I do support the idea
- that an announcement of a posting should describe any limitations and
- prices of things that are posted. Including prices is controversial,
- because some people think that is like advertizing. I don't agree with
- this: I believe that the announcement should inform the reader fully
- before a package is downloaded so including price information should be
- required (strongly encouraged.)
-
- Regarding the /demo/ directory I must say that I am biased as th author
- of /info-mac/demo/empire-master.hqx. The question is, what makes a
- program a demo? Compactor, Shadow Keep and MacBzone (among others)
- all require the entry to a user code before you can use all features of
- the program without seeing any shareware messages but I don't think
- they are in the demo directory.

- >From a demo (Example: the NISUS demo which flags all printout as
- being from the demo).
-
- AutoMenus II, on the other hand, simply expires. Not sneakily -- you
- are told that right up front. It doesn't disable or damage anything else,
- it simply disables itself. That isn't, IMHO, a demo version. I don't
- have to buy, order, download, or install anything new to get the
- "real" product. Just register, and Michael will send you the code to
- remove the expiration feature.
-
- To me (and again, these are MY opinions - you don't have to agree)
- this is a far more palatable method of trying to get reasonable
- shareware registration than providing crippleware. Consider the
- alternative. Michael could sell AutoMenus to NOW, or some other
- company and they could bundle it with NOW Utilities. Michael would
- then get paid for each copy sold and we'd have another great
- shareware product gone commercial (remember Boomerang?).
-
- I find AutoMenus (the original, and now II) to be one of those things
- that I would not do without on my machine. I think it would be a
- shame if it and others like it were buried in the "demo" folder. I
- wouldn't be opposed to seeing the posting messages required to
- clearly state any such expirations or conditions, however.
-
- (No, I'm not involved with AutoMenus or Michael Conrad other than as
- a satisfied and very happy shareware registrant)

-
- My understanding (*please* correct me if I'm wrong) is that the
- disk cache (set via the Memory control panel) affects I/O speed
- by allowing your Mac to "memorize" frequently accessed stuff, so
- it doesn't actually have to read it from the drive each time.
-
- Assuming this is true, how does this work? I guess I don't really
- need the details, but I would like to know if this is a good way
- to save power using a PowerBook. I have cranked my cache up to 256K,
- but I can't say I have noticed any difference (except the larger
- System memory consumption). On the PB the goal would be to eliminate
- *all* disk usage while doing one task so the disk can spin down and stay
- down. If even a large disk cache will only speed up disk access rather
- than eliminate it (obviously not completely, but I hope you see my
- meaning), it won't be worth it.

-
- The backbone is running at T3 or faster. I routinely transfer files at
- 18 to 28 KBYTES per second from the Left Coast. I occasionally get low
- speeds (sometime under 1K per second) on the rare occasions when I ftp
- to Europe. The transfer rate is limited by the slowest link on your
- connect path. It's not a particularly good idea to try and ftp at
- midday when the nets are running at peak load, but I've grabbed small
- files from sumex-aim or ftp.apple.com in the early afternoon once or
- twice (transfer rates at 11 KBytes/second or so).
-
- If you're getting transfers under 2K bytes/second (16K bps) at night and
- on weekends, it's NOT the backbone. Your rates appear suspiciously
- close to what you'd expect from an RS-232 link; I'll bet your speed
- limit is very close to home (perhaps as near as the distance between
- your workstation and the wall).
-
- The last I read Congress has authorized increasing the backbone to 1

- Subject: How to tell whether fonts can be freely distributed (?)
-
- Here's a toughie. Today a student gave me a disk with some Macintosh
- TrueType fonts along with a few standard bitmap sizes. He says that he
- got them from a friend and has no idea where his friend got them. I've
- looked at enough public domain fonts to appreciate the difference in
- quality between the output of individuals versus the font foundries. In
- short, these fonts look too good to not to be copyright by someone (they
- probably were paid for at some time by some one who had one of those
- CD-ROM disks you can get font passwords for in return for a fee).
-
- The problem is: fonts whether in suitcases or as individual documents
- aren't readily identifiable as copyright. I examined the 'sfnt'
- resource with ResEdit and sure enough there's a "redistribution strictly
- prohibited" notice buried in there (not right at the top or bottom
- either). I don't think it's reasonable to expect the ordinary user have
- to go to that length to determine the pedigree of a font.
-
- Someone also gave me a font converted from Windows 3.1. Its 'sfnt'
- resource has a Microsoft copyright but makes no statement about
- redistribution (having been burned by whoever put BeHierarchic 2.0 in
- Genie's public folder, I've learned caution). Microsoft is a widely
- recognized commercial source; one can reasonably conclude that software
- with its copyright can't be freely shared, but there are loads of less
- widely known vendors.
-
- Didn't I read in InfoWorld that Windows 3.1 has the capacity of carrying
- BOTH fonts that can be passed from one user to another AND others that
- can are read only (attached to the document they came with)? Its a
- great idea but it does complicate the "what can I pass along" problem.
-
- I expect the problem of sorting out what fonts can be freely shared from
- those that cannot is going to get rapidly out of hand as fonts are able
- to cross platforms. I'm not in a position to think about how to get a
- copyright identifier to pop up into a get info box, but someone probably
- ought to figure a better way of protecting the foundries property rights
- before things get completely out-of-hand (if we haven't arrived at that
- point already).

- I hate to tell you this, Dave, but that's because you're in the

- (that means 6K/s or so *maximum*). Those of us out here on the 'main

-
- MacTheKnife has predicted the near term demise of the PB 100, but
- MacTheKnife has also incorrectly predicted the end of the Apple 2 on
- about a dozen occasions. Indeed sales have been "disappointing." What
- happened is that Apple underestimated the extent to which the 140 would
- be favored over the 100 in spite of the price difference (which has been
- diminishing). Easy enough to say "of course" in hindsight, but the
- truth is estimating relative demand within a line of similar models is
- VERY difficult. So, the 140's and 170's have been moving off the
- shelves as fast as Apple can produce them and the 100's have just sat
- there.
-
- Apple will continue to sell the 100 as long as it's profitable to do so.
- Others may discover that the real mistake was marketing the original
- 100 as a 2/20 (ugh!). The PB 100 DOES have a 16 MHz CPU (about twice as
- brisk as the Classic). The 4/40 can run System 7 quite nicely (or
- System 6 for those who prefer it). As a word processing and data entry
- machine or "on-the-road" Mac as a 2nd computer, the 100 is a heck of a
- buy (it'll run circles around 386SX MeSsy DOS laptops in the same price
- range).
-
- >If there is to be a replacement, I would hope that it will retain all
- >the qualities of the PB 100 that Alan so rightly underlines: compactness
- >and lightness...
-
- In the past, Apple has designed and beta tested a number of CPU's
- (primarily new Apple II's) that they ultimately elected NOT to market.
- A number of different flavor "new" PowerBooks have been conceived. I
- doubt there's room in the market for them all (the proposed PB 140 seems
- to me a particularly useless model--most of us with 170's run them at 16
- MHz on the battery. What the 140 needs is an FPU not 25 MHz--having
- used both, I can report that 16 with an FPU is fast enough for most
- purposed; the extra speed at 25 MHz is noticeable when compressing
- archives or doing serious number crunching, but not when writing (or
- answering email :) Heck, a PB 140 with an FPU would be (nearly) an
- <drumroll> SE/30!
-
- Apple WILL offer new PowerBooks within nine months, and the attractive
- features will be grayscale (maybe even color) displays and external
- video out. The present PB 140 may take over the price position of the
- 100, and there may be a new ultra lightweight model (one is in beta, but
- Apple may not market it). I think I'll keep my PB 170 until the low
- power version of the PowerPC results in a PowerBook five times as fast
- as a Quadra 950 for under $3,000 (by 1995 or sooner--remember you read

- I'm curious as to the latest on PowerBook 170 availability (or
- lack there of!). I ordered one in May, for use while on leave. Original
- estimates were for 6-8 week delivery; recent info from Apple was to
- expect another 13 weeks before "allocation" (which means another couple of
- weeks before shipping/delivery). I'm off on leave in early August and

- have any reliable information on how Apple prioritizes orders on

- Is there anyone I can contact to lobby about the strategic benefits
- of putting my Powerbook in my hands sooner? Geez I hate spending big

- Anyone with information (hard or anecdotal) may write to me and

-
- If I understand Alysis's documentation correctly the cdev doesn't
- actually turn off the caches. What it does is flush them on every
- memory access by an app on its edit list (which "emulates" turning the
- caches off). The practical effect is that other apps (even those in
- background) continue to benefit from caching and AppleTalk's timing
- isn't screwed up. Clever. Making the cdev too automatic would take too
- many cycles (would require the cdev to analyze the code of each app as
- launched at a minimum). The cdev is sometimes handy but (thankfully)
- increasingly unnecessary. I have not regretted being the first
- individual not employed by Apple in this state to own a
- Quadra--negligible problems; those who hesitate are missing a lot of

-
- Right, Paul. There's a world of difference between an executable BASIC
- program and a listing of same. What you want is a listing, printed to
- disk on the Apple side. Then you can take it over to the Mac.
-
- I don't recall the AppleSoft command string, but an Apple /// Business
- BASIC common trick was to start each program like this:
-
- 10 GOTO 30
- 20 OPEN#1 AS OUTPUT,"pathname":OUTPUT#1:OUTREC=255:LIST:CLOSE#1:END
- 30 REM Actual start of program
-
- I suspect the AppleSoft version is similar. The above caused a normal
- RUN to actually run the program, but if you said RUN 20, you get the
- program listed as an ASCII text file. We who hated the BASIC editor
- used that option, edited the text file in a WP program, then EXEC'd
- it back into BASIC for testing. The OUTREC=255 is to keep the lines of
- the text file from breaking at 80 characters.
-
- Hope this helps.

-
- AppleSoft is "tokenized." That is common commands such as DO IF, PRINT
- and so forth are stored as single binary bytes. I suppose the tokens
- are documented somewhere, but it would be MUCH easier to find an Apple 2
- and use the widely documented one line statement (which I've forgotten
- but must have on a disk somewhere) to LIST each program into a TEXT file
- (which you can then import to your Mac quite easily with AFE).

-
- I admit that running System 7, a few extensions and an application
- in 2 MBytes is a challenge to one's manhood, but it's really not all
- that onerous (unless one INSISTS on using Excel 4.0 :)
-
- As I've said before, I've loaded System 7 tuned, Apollo, BeHierarchic,
- DeskPict, AutoMenus, Eyes, BigFoot, SndControl, Cursor Animator, and
- Apple's standard cdev's onto an SE with 2 MBytes and launched MacWrite
- II. Even with AppleTalk on, there's room enough to spell check a
- document of modest size (Word Finder complains unless AppleTalk is
- turned off). I didn't try ClarisWorks, but since it requires even less
- CPU than MacWrite II, it should work just fine. Given the current cost
- of memory (except for PowerBook RAM :-( I agree that everyone should
- expand to 4 MBytes at least and applaud Apple's decision to make 4 MB
- the minimum "standard" configuration.
-
- Those of us who take computing seriously sometimes 4 MBytes (even 8)
- cramped, but we're not the bulk of the market. The bulk of the market
- is still wrapping away happily with Word 3.0 on a 1 MByte Mac SE running
- 6.0.4 (or so it seems on my campus ;-)

- This is documented in the README file, but not in big bold letters,
